I Like Thursdays Dec 7

Greetings!

It's 50 degrees outside. Yay! we have finally cooled off in the mornings.  It'll be in the 70's later.

So, here's my "likes" list for this week:

1.   Stash fabric for emergencies.  I have most the Christmas shopping done, wrapped and under the tree. That was after I made a very basic circle tree skirt in a new light blue fabric I found in the stash.
Originally, I had planned to decorate our small tree in blue/white but when my grandson Thomas helped me decorate the tree he added all the snowmen. It was his first time actually applying anything to the tree as it was a sensory issue all these years so he was very brave and now is proud of his helping me. What a moment that was.
I still wanted the  light blue fabric for the bottom cause it looks like snow to me.  A girl can dream. (Sorry that the photo is a little blurry).
As usual, I'm having a difficult time "getting in the spirit of the holidays " but I'm trying. I've gone to 2 malls in the area and they were so boring- no music,-- one didn't even have decorations-- and quite honestly, there were not the usual amount of shoppers.

2.  My "HGTV " shelf over the tv.  I don't have much table or shelf space in this living room but wanted a place for little knick knacks so my SIL installed a shelf for me.  When Thomas saw it for the first time , he said, " A HGTV shelf. I love it".  We all laughed. He obviously watched that channel with his mom.

It is about 3 feet long, just enough for the space. We love the little light it provides (I used battery operated white string lights in the background).

3.  My Three  Wise Women towel.  My daughter gave it to me a few years ago..  She knows me so well.

4. Time Magazine's Persons of the year- the Silence Breakers.  What a year this has been! The Silence Breakers are the persons (men and women) who can finally open up, speak up and state who has harmed them. I have been so blessed to have never faced sexual  harassment/ assault in the workplace or public. It takes a tremendous amount of courage to come forward in public. I'm pleased this group of people are being recognized and perhaps this will encourage others to come forward as well as scare the crap out of the abusers. just sayin. I won't even go into the crimes aspect here.

Time to get ready for my annual mammo (mom had breast cancer) so need to cut this short this week. Why can't someone invent a more pleasant way to X-ray my boobs? It is so uncomfortable! Oh well, better than the alternative.

My daughter and I are going to see a special playing of "White Christmas" at the movies Saturday so that should be fun.

I hope you all are enjoying this holiday season. Please hook up with Lee Anna :Not Afraid of Color to see our group of "likers".

Have a great day and thanks for stopping by!
mary

  1. yes! The silence breakers. They give me courage. I am a survivor of childhood and adult sexual abuse and it's hard to admit. The fact that so many are feeling free to admit it happened is empowering.
Like the old movie network news. "we're mad as hell and we're not going to take it anymore"

I love your makeshift mantle. And the tree is magical, pretty but the magic was connection with your grandson.

    1. OMG -I'm sorry you had to go thru such horrific life experiences. You are a strong woman, girl. Thx for the understanding thoughts on my pumpkin.

  2. Mary, I never felt the same about Christmas once my girls left the nest. Now with the grandsons, it is a little like it but not the same. But we really want that feeling, don't we.
I just don't know how us women ever let it become such a man's world. Women are so strong.

    1. I have come to know strong women mostly in the last few years. I did not have strong role models growing up. Then when I started working at 18 and for the next 50 years I realized just what a man's world it is. I think I became strong because of that but it took many years. I'm much stronger now. I agree with the empty nest feeling-it sucks. But, if it weren't for my youngest grandson who is special needs and needs my help I don't know how happy my life would be as a single older woman. Everyone else is living their own life. And, of course I've been taking care of my brother here for 14 years which keeps me busy. Thank God I found quilting! Hope you have a blessed day. mary

  3. So glad you're almost done with shopping! I'm not nearly there yet which is strange for me. And I love your little shelf, especially the pretty snowman on the end. The idea to use battery powered string lights to illuminate it is so clever, it does away with the ugly cord (or even worse no outlet) problems.

    1. I know! There are no close outlets and the cord would look silly. thx.

  4. Hi Mary,
Oh that reminds me about the mammogram. I always make my bestie go with me (her grandmother had breast cancer), and we usually go in November. Geez, I'd better call today. And the Silence Breakers - good for them. I have never faced this issue myself but I can only imagine how hard it would be to speak up. Maybe this will be the era when it stops, for good. Dare to dream anyway. Your little tree looks so festive, and good for Thomas to help you decorate. I'll bet he was so excited to see the efforts of his hard word and courage when he was finished hanging them. ~smile~ Roseanne

    1. Yes, this is a more fun Christmas for Thomas because he has a better understanding of the festivities and wants to participate. I never thought that would happen based on his initial diagnosis.
I hope you made that appointment. It's not pleasant one but a necessity. Have a wonderful day. mary

So special your grandson braved the Christmas tree. I can see how that would have been a scary scratchy thing!

  6. I love your lighted shelf, and what a great idea to get a battery powered string of lights! Where do you find them? I love the wise women towel, too. It's definitely right!:) So glad your grandson is now able to participate in decorating the tree. It's such a good feeling when you growth and new things happening with kids, especially when it's unexpected. Happy Thursday, Mary!

  7. Your tree is cute. I like your blue fabric, and from a person with plenty of snow, the blue is like snow. I was forced into the Christmas spirit because of the grandsons and their Christmas parade. I agree totally with the women brave enough to speak out. I remember those times, starting in Jr. High, boys grabbing as you walked by, the comments, I even had a female school administrator accuse me of some pretty disgusting things to end up with straight A's. It is amazing that it has taken almost 40 years since that time in my life for things to change.

  11. Your HGTV shelf! Aw, Thomas, and aw on his snowmen, yay, I thought they looked so cute before I even read it was his touch. YESSS. on the Times, let's hope this puts an end to such disregard for humans. Love your towel; I've seen that saying but not on a Christmas towel; think my daughter would love it, so I will be looking for it!
